Sitter Sessions – Why It’s a Good Idea to Capture Those In-Between Stages

For babies aged 7–10 months — full of personality, chubby rolls, and first giggles

When it comes to baby photography, the two most popular milestones are newborn and first birthday — and both are truly special in their own right. But there’s one magical stage in between that often gets overlooked… and I’m here to tell you, it absolutely shouldn’t be!

Enter the Sitter Session — a gorgeous photoshoot for babies around 7 to 10 months, when they’re able to sit unaided but aren’t quite on the move yet. It’s a sweet spot of babyhood that deserves its own spotlight — and here’s exactly why.

1. Their Personality Is Bursting Through

At this stage, babies start showing so much expression. From shy smiles to belly laughs, cheeky faces to curious stares, they’re full of personality — and they’re not afraid to show it.

Sitter sessions are perfect for capturing the uniqueness of your little one before the whirlwind of toddlerhood begins.

2. They’re Sitting, Not Running (Yet!)

This stage is a dream for photographers — babies can sit up confidently (often with adorable wobbling!) but aren’t yet crawling or running off mid-shot. That means we can get beautiful, calm, connected portraits without the need to chase them around the studio.

You’ll get a lovely variety of images: close-ups, playful interaction, and those chunky little arms and legs sitting proud on blankets, baskets, or your lap.

3. You’ve All Settled Into Family Life

By the time your baby is 7–10 months old, the newborn haze has usually lifted just a little. You’re more in your groove, you know their routine, and you’ve all grown into this new version of family.

It’s such a lovely time to reflect on how far you’ve come — and sitter sessions can include a few gentle parent or sibling photos too, if you’d like.

4. It Fills the Gap Between Newborn & First Birthday

Let’s be honest — so much changes in the first year, it’s almost wild. Sitter sessions are the perfect halfway marker between those sleepy newborn snuggles and the joyful chaos of a first birthday or a cake smash.

Think of it as the “chapter in the middle” — still so baby-like, but so full of growth, connection, and change.

5. The Cutest Photos You Didn’t Know You Needed

Chubby toes, gummy grins, wide-eyed wonder… This stage is peak baby cuteness. And because sitter sessions are often short and sweet (about 30–45 minutes), they’re perfect even for busy families or babies with short attention spans.

I keep everything relaxed and baby-led in my cosy Nottingham home studio— and we’ll capture these fleeting days just as they are.
