My 8 most asked questions from new mums before booking a newborn photoshoot.
If you’re expecting a baby (first of all a huge congratulations!) and are starting to think about booking a newborn photoshoot, you might have a few questions swirling in your head. That’s completely normal — in fact, most new parents ask me the same things before they book. It's so important to pick the right photographer for your newborn shoot so its understandable to ask some important questions before coming the right one for you.
To make life a little easier, I’ve put together the top 8 questions I get asked about newborn photography. Hopefully, this will give you a clearer idea of what to expect and help you feel excited about capturing this special time.
Top 8 Questions
- When’s the best time to take newborn photos?
- What should we bring to our newborn shoot?
- How should we prepare for the session?
- How much does the shoot cost?
- Is it safe to do a newborn photoshoot?
- Can sibling and family photos be included?

- What if my baby cries or won’t sleep?
When’s the best time to take newborn photos?
The ideal time for a newborn session is when your baby is between 5 and 21 days old. At this stage, they’re usually (fingers crossed) still very sleepy and curled up, which makes it easier to capture those snuggly, relaxed moments.
That said — if your baby is a little older, don’t worry! My style is natural and baby-led, so we’ll capture beautiful images at any age.
What should we bring to our newborn shoot?
You shouldn't have to bring much at all! My cosy home studio in Nottingham has most things you might need — blankets, wraps, soft fabrics, outfits from my client wardrobe. Plus a comfy seat for you to watch your little newborn be captured in the best way (maybe with a little tea or coffee to relax as well)
The only things I recommend bringing are:
Nappies
Milk/feeds (whether bottle or breast, we can pause for breaks whenever needed)
A plain white baby grow
Any small sentimental item you’d love included in the photos (optional)
How should we prepare for the session?
Honestly, there’s not much you need to do. The beauty of my sessions is that they’re relaxed and simple.
A few helpful tips:
Try to feed your baby just before you leave or when you arrive, so they’re settled.
Dress baby in loose, easy-to-remove clothing on top of the plain white vest (nothing too tight that leaves marks or has to be taken over the head so we don't disturb them to much).
If you'd like to include some family photos as well, consider what you might like to where which will be complimentary with your partner. I have loads more information in my Welcome guide which I send out to everyone upon booking. The main thing though is to come in feeling comfortable.
How much does the shoot cost?
The price depends on the package you choose. I offer 3 different options so you can pick what feels right for your family — from a handful of beautiful images to full galleries and prints to have as keepsakes.
Once you enquire, I’ll send you my full price guide so you can see all the details.
Is it safe to do a newborn photoshoot?
Yes, absolutely. Your baby’s safety is my number one priority. I never force babies into unnatural poses or use props that could be unsafe. Instead, my sessions are gentle, baby-led, and completely focused on comfort.
We take breaks whenever needed, and I always make sure your little one is supported, warm, and happy.
Can sibling and family photos be included?
Absolutely! In fact, I encourage it if you feel comfortable to be in front of the camera. Your newborn session isn’t just about your baby — it’s about your growing family and the love you all share. But please don't feel pressured to be in the photos, I know it might take a lot after just having a newborn. If it's not for you we can maybe capture some faceless shots where I like to create a connection with you and your little one using hands and feet. Meaning you are in the photos but not directly in them.
I do love capturing though those natural sibling cuddles, little kisses, and whole-family snuggles. They often end up being parents’ favourite photos.
How long does a newborn session take?
A typical newborn session lasts around 2–3 hours. That might sound like a long time, but don’t worry — it’s not all photography. We take plenty of breaks for feeding, cuddles, nappy changes, and just giving you space to relax.
There’s never any rush. My cosy studio is designed to feel calm and welcoming, so you can sit back and enjoy the experience.
What if my baby cries or won’t sleep?
This is probably the number one worry parents have — but I promise, it’s nothing to stress about. Babies cry, they wriggle, they feed, they sometimes stay wide awake — and it’s all completely normal.
Because my sessions are baby-led, we just go with the flow. Sometimes we might not take a single photo in the first 45 minutes, but trust me its very are that baby won't sleep for at least some of their shoot. Some of the most beautiful photos are taken when babies are awake especially for my older newborn sessions.
If your baby needs a break, we pause. There’s never any pressure or time limit.
Ready to book your newborn shoot?
I hope this has answered some of your questions and helped you feel more relaxed about what a newborn photoshoot involves. If you’d love natural, timeless photos of your baby’s first days, I’d love to welcome you to my cosy home Nottingham studio.
It’s best to book your newborn session during pregnancy to secure a space, as I only take a limited number each month to keep things flexible for due dates.
I’d love to hear from you soon, and congratulations again on expecting your little one.
