Intro
If your baby is already a few weeks old and you haven't booked your newborn photoshoot yet, you might be wondering whether you've missed your chance.
Perhaps life with your new little one has been a little overwhelming, you've been adjusting to your new routine, or the weeks have simply flown by quicker than you expected.
First of all, take a breath. You've got enough to think about as a new mum without worrying that you've missed the opportunity to capture those precious early memories.
The good news is that you can absolutely still have a newborn photoshoot if your baby is older than three weeks!
Although the first few weeks are often recommended for traditional newborn photography, there isn't a strict cut-off for capturing beautiful photographs of your baby.
As a newborn photographer in Nottingham, I love creating natural, timeless photographs that capture your baby just as they are. My approach is relaxed and baby-led, which means we can adapt the session to suit your little one.
Here's what you need to know if your baby is already a little older.
Here's What To Remember-
-You haven't necessarily missed your chance for a newborn photoshoot.
-Every baby develops at their own pace, and beautiful photographs can be captured beyond the first three weeks.
-Your session can be adapted to your baby's age, comfort and personality.
-Awake photographs, tiny expressions and natural family cuddles are just as special.
-My baby-led approach means there's no pressure for your baby to sleep or fit into a particular pose.
Have I Missed The Newborn Photography Window?
One of the questions parents often have is whether their baby is now too old for newborn photography.
Normally my newborn photoshoots are often scheduled within the first few weeks after birth. During this time, babies can be sleepier and may naturally curl up into those lovely, snug positions we associate with newborn photographs.
However, every baby is different. Some babies are more alert from the very beginning, while others continue to enjoy lots of sleepy cuddles as they grow.
Although your baby's appearance and behaviour will change quickly during those early weeks, that doesn't mean you've missed the opportunity to capture beautiful memories.
Whether your little one is three weeks old, six weeks old or a little older, we can talk about what you're hoping for and decide whether a newborn style session is the right fit.
The most important thing is capturing this stage of your family's story, rather than worrying about a particular date on the calendar.
What Changes When Your Baby Is Older Than 3 Weeks?
Babies change so quickly during their first few months, and you might notice a difference in how your little one behaves during a photoshoot.
As they grow, they may become more alert, stretch out more often or spend longer looking around.
Some babies also become less comfortable with the curled-up positions often used in newborn photography. This simply means we may approach your session a little differently.
Rather than expecting your baby to sleep throughout the photoshoot or settle into certain positions, we can focus on natural photographs that suit their stage.
Think tiny expressions, little stretches, delicate fingers and toes, and those beautiful moments when you hold your baby close.
These details might seem small now, but they're often the things you'll look back on and wish you could experience all over again.
Can You Still Have Beautiful Newborn Photos At 4, 6 or 8 Weeks?
Absolutely!
Although older babies may not always settle into the same positions as younger newborns, that doesn't make their photographs any less meaningful.
In fact, there can be something really lovely about photographing your baby when they're a little more alert.
You might capture their wide eyes as they look around, their little expressions as they take everything in, or the way they curl their fingers around yours.
We can also include photographs of you holding your baby, gentle cuddles with mum and dad, and natural family moments that show just how loved your little one is.
My style of newborn photography is simple and timeless. I don't rely on lots of props or complicated setups to create beautiful images.
Instead, I focus on your baby, the connection you share and the little details that make this stage so special.
Every baby is different, so I can't promise that an older baby will settle into every traditional newborn pose. But we can always discuss your expectations and focus on capturing your little one naturally and comfortably.
What If My Baby Is Awake For Most Of The Session?
Please don't worry!
Your baby doesn't need to sleep for us to create a beautiful gallery of moments.
Some babies snooze happily for most of their photoshoot, while others are wide awake, curious about their surroundings or ready for lots of cuddles. Both are completely normal.
An awake baby gives us the chance to capture different expressions and little moments of curiosity. Sometimes, those wide-eyed photographs become some of the most treasured images in a family's gallery.
My sessions are baby-led, which means we follow your baby's cues and allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, settling and cuddles.
There's no pressure to make your baby sleep or rush through the session.

Why I Love Natural Baby-Led Newborn Photography
One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that no two babies or families are the same.
That's why I believe your photographs should reflect your little one, rather than trying to make every session look identical.
My approach is calm, relaxed and baby-led. I use soft neutral colours and simple styling to keep the focus on your baby and the connection you share as a family.
There are no expectations for your baby to behave in a certain way, and we never need to rush through the experience. Whether your baby is fast asleep, looking around or needing plenty of cuddles, we'll work with them and adapt as we go.
My cosy home studio in Newthorpe (NG16) is designed to give families a comfortable space to slow down and enjoy this special time together.
As a Nottingham newborn photographer, my aim is to create timeless photographs that you'll love looking back on for years to come, whatever stage your baby is at when we meet.
Should I Still Book A Newborn Photoshoot If My Baby Is Older?
If you've been putting off booking because you think your baby is now too old, I'd always encourage you to get in touch and have a chat. Tell me how old your baby is, what kind of photographs you love and what you'd like to remember about this stage.
We can then discuss whether a newborn session is suitable for your little one and what we can realistically capture.
You don't need to have everything figured out before enquiring, and you certainly don't need to feel that you've done anything wrong by waiting.
Life with a new baby can be unpredictable. Sometimes, getting through the day is enough!
The important thing is that you still have the opportunity to preserve memories of your baby while they're so little.
