Intro

One of the most common worries I hear from new parents before their newborn photoshoot is:

“What if my baby doesn't sleep?”

And honestly, it's a completely understandable question.

When you see newborn photography online, you often see beautifully sleepy babies curled up peacefully in blankets. So it's easy to think your baby needs to sleep through the whole session for you to get those lovely photographs.

But the truth is — your baby doesn't have to sleep for their newborn photoshoot.

Some babies sleep almost the entire time. Others are wide awake and need lots of cuddles, want to feed, have a little cry.

And that's absolutely fine.

My newborn photography sessions are baby-led, which means we don't work against your baby. We follow their cues and give them plenty of time and let the session unfold naturally.

Here's What To Remember-

-Your baby doesn't need to sleep for the whole session

-Awake photographs can be just as beautiful as sleepy ones

-We can stop for feeds, cuddles and comfort whenever your baby needs them

-We never rush or force your baby into a pose

-Some of the most precious photographs happen when babies are awake

-The most important thing is that your baby feels safe, comfortable and settled

Your Baby Doesn't Have To Sleep

I think this is the biggest thing I want parents to know before their newborn session.

There is no “perfect” baby for a photoshoot.

Your baby might arrive fast asleep and stay that way. They might fall asleep halfway through. They might wake up as soon as we start taking photographs!

That's just newborns being newborns.

I always say to my parents, please don't worry if we haven't taken a single photo in the first 45 minutes. This doesn't mean we won't capture any at all.

Rather than worrying about whether your baby is asleep, I want you to enjoy the experience and let me work around them.

If your baby is awake, we can capture those beautiful wide eyes, tiny expressions, little stretches and all those new details that change so quickly.

Awake Photos Can Be Just As Special

Sleepy photographs are beautiful, but they aren't the only photographs worth capturing.

That first proper look at the camera.

-A tiny yawn.

-Those little hands stretching above their head.

-The way they look up at Mum or Dad.

-A sleepy smile.

-Their curious little expressions.

These moments show who your baby was at the very beginning, and they are photographs you will treasure just as much as the sleepy ones.

We Can Take Our Time

One of the reasons I always allocate up to 3 hours per shoot and only book 1 newborn shoot per day is so I can keep my newborn photography sessions relaxed so we don't need to rush.

If your baby wakes up, we simply pause.

If they need a feed, we feed them.

If they need a cuddle, you cuddle them.

If they need changing, we take care of that too.

Newborns don't follow a schedule just because we have a camera ready!

Taking regular breaks is completely normal during a newborn photoshoot, and it's all part of creating a calm experience for both you and your baby.

What If My Baby Starts To Cry

Please don't worry about this either.

Your baby crying doesn't mean the photoshoot is going wrong.

Sometimes babies simply need either a feed, a cuddle, a nappy change, a little movement or some reassurance from Mum or Dad.

I'll never expect you to leave your baby upset just because we're taking photographs.

We stop, comfort them and start again when they're ready.

Keeping babies comfortable and safe is something I always priority before getting a particular photograph. Professional newborn photography guidance similarly emphasises following the baby's cues and prioritising their comfort and safety rather than forcing a pose.

Feeding And Cuddling Are Part Of The Session

Newborn babies have very small tummies, so it's completely normal for them to want to feed during their session.

You don't need to worry about whether feeding will “waste” photography time- It won't.

In fact, feeding and cuddling can often be the perfect opportunity to slow everything down.

The Session Is Baby Led

This is one of the most important parts of my approach to newborn photography.

I don't expect your baby to fit around the photoshoot but instead the photoshoot fits around your baby.

That means watching their cues, allowing them to settle in their own time and adapting what we're doing depending on how they're feeling.

It also means that you don't need to arrive feeling like everything has to go perfectly as trust me there is no perfect newborn session.

There is simply your baby, your family and this tiny chapter of your lives.

Newborn Photography in Nottingham

If you've been worrying that your baby needs to sleep for your newborn photoshoot to be successful, hopefully this has put your mind at ease.

Your baby might sleep.

They might not.

They might sleep for five minutes and then decide they're wide awake.

They might need three feeds.

They might spend half the session being cuddled by you.

And that's all completely normal.

My job is to photograph your baby as they are.

Because one day, you'll look back at these images and remember those tiny hands, those little expressions, the way they fitted so perfectly into your arms and just how small they really were.

At my cosy home photography studio in Newthorpe, I offer relaxed, natural newborn photography in Nottingham for families who want beautiful photographs without the pressure of everything having to be perfect.

My sessions are baby-led, calm and unhurried, with plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and breaks.

Whether your baby sleeps throughout the session or spends most of it wide awake, we'll simply follow their lead and capture the little moments that make this stage so special.
