Top 5 Key Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer Before Booking Your Photoshoot
For natural, baby-led newborn sessions in Nottingham and Derby
Welcoming a new baby into your world is one of the most emotional, beautiful, and let’s be honest, chaotic times of your life — and capturing those early days through photography is something so many parents treasure forever.
But how do you know you’re choosing the right photographer for such a personal and delicate moment? Whether you’re a first-time mum or adding another little love to your crew, it’s important to feel comfortable and confident before booking.
Here are 5 key questions to ask your newborn photographer before you take the plunge — and why the answers matter.
5 Key points-
- How are your sessions led?
- Location?
- Safety?
- What's included?
- Style
1. Are Your Sessions Baby-Led and Flexible?
Babies have their own little rhythm — and it doesn’t always match our plans! A good newborn photographer will work entirely around your baby’s needs, not the clock. My Newborn sessions normally take up to 3 hours (so block out plenty of time in the day) as this allows us loads of time to capture some beautiful photos. Also it allows times for breaks, changing, feeding, cuddling etc. If baby needs some extra cuddles then changing things up and capturing some family photos half way is perfect for settling them.
Why it matters: Allowing time for feeding, changing, cuddling, and settling takes the pressure and rush out of things, and the less pressure and stress the calmer your baby will be. Babies pick up on stress so let me elimate that part for you . My sessions are always calm, baby-led, and flexible, with lots of tea breaks if needed!
2. Where Do the Sessions Take Place — and What’s the Space Like?
Ask whether the shoot happens and where the studio is based, plus what’s the vibe? is there enough space, can I bring any siblings? If so do you have anything that can keep them entertained? Is it warm and welcoming? Does it feel like somewhere you could genuinely relax?
Why it matters: Newborn photos should happen in a peaceful, safe environment where you and baby can feel at ease. My home studio in Nottingham is cosy, light-filled, and fully kitted out for new mums and little ones.
3. What Safety Measures Do You Take During Newborn Sessions?
Your baby’s safety and comfort should always come first. Make sure your photographer is trained in safe posing techniques and knows how to handle babies with care and experience. I have been photographing newborns for over 3 years now and the safety of your new arrival is so important to me. I will always make sure they are comfortable, never left unaided, and positioned safely.
Why it matters: Newborns are incredibly delicate. I only use gentle, natural poses — no forced positions — and everything is done at baby’s pace, with constant attention to warmth, cleanliness, and safety.
4. What’s Included in the Session — and Are There Extra Costs Later?
Be clear on what you’re actually getting for the session fee. Does it include digital images? Prints? Albums? Are there extra charges for siblings or parents joining in?
Is there any outfits included, What is the time scale on receiving my photos?, How do I view them?
Why it matters: You want to know exactly what’s included and avoid any surprise costs later. I offer a few simple packages with no hidden fees — and yes, siblings and parents are always welcome (and encouraged!). Thought out my whole booking process you will receive in-depth documents from myself every step of the way. From my session pricing guide, to upon booking you will relieve all confirmation details, along with my Welcome guide which is packed with information leading up to your session. Plus detailed information during your session and after with steps of what's next.
5. What’s Your Photography Style — and Can I See examples?
Every photographer has a unique style. Some prefer highly posed, studio setups with props, while others (like me!) focus on natural, unposed moments and soft, timeless tones. Have a look through my website and social medias to view images/galleries I have created from previous clients.
Why it matters: You want to feel connected to the photographer’s style, because your final images will reflect that approach. If you love relaxed, honest, connection-focused photography — I might be the right fit for you.
Final Thought:
Choosing a newborn photographer is a personal decision — you’re inviting someone into your family’s most tender, unforgettable moments. Ask questions, trust your gut, and choose someone who makes you feel supported, calm, and excited.
So if your not looking for someone that is,
-Friendly and helpful,
-Who's style is classic and minimal,
-Who puts your little one first,
-Understands your vision,
-Has a warm and inviting home studio
-Someone that captures every little detail.
Than maybe I'm not for you, but if all of these do tick your requirements and it that sounds like what you’re looking for… I’d love to chat!
