When is the best time to book in my newborn shoot?

Everything you need to know about booking your newborn shoot at the right time

If you’re expecting a baby (Massive congratulations!) and you have been wondering when to book your newborn session — you’re not alone. It’s one of my most asked questions I get from families and mums-to-be. And the truth is, I always say the earlier you plan, the better.

So here’s a simple, no-fuss guide to help you feel confident about when and why to book your session — and what to expect along the way.

So… when should I actually book?

I say the ideal time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester (around 20–30 weeks). This gives us plenty of time to chat about the lead up to your shoot, pencil in a date around your due date (normally within the first 3 weeks), and make sure you’re in my calendar, so you don't miss out on them first few weeks..

Newborn slots are limited each month so I can keep things calm and flexible — and make space for babies who arrive early or a little later (as they love to do!).

Booking early = less stress and worry later.

When will the actual shoot take place?

Your Newborn shoot will usually be held when your baby is between 5 and 21 days old. Why that window? At this stage, babies are still very sleepy (fingers crossed), snuggly and curled up, which helps me capture those beautifully relaxed, natural moments you’ll always treasure. It also helps if you are planning on trying to capture some curled up in their tummy photos as well.

That said — if your baby is a little older, please don’t panic. I’ve photographed newborns at 5 and even 8 weeks old. Every baby is different, and my style is all about going with the flow. The slightly older they are, more awake and alert means we might have the chance to capture those first few smiles and giggles.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

That’s totally okay! As we know they like to keep us on your toes. When you book, we'll book a provisional date within 3 weeks from your due date which can be completely amended depending on when they arrive. Once baby is here, just drop me a message if you'd like to bring your shoot date forward to push it back a little..

Because I only take on a limited number of newborn bookings per month, there’s always a bit of wiggle room to move things around and make sure you don’t miss out.

Where does the session happen?

All newborn shoots take place in my cosy, calm home studio in Nottingham, designed to feel like a comfy extension of your own home. The kettle’s always on, there’s no rush, and you can take breaks for feeding, changing or just having a breather whenever you need.

My style is natural, relaxed and simple — think soft wraps, gentle light, and lots of cuddly family moments. No props, no pressure, no awkward poses.

How to secure your spot

If you’re currently expecting, the best next step is to get in touch as soon as you can. We’ll pencil in a date around your due date, and then confirm your shoot with a small deposit.

It’s one less thing to worry about in those busy final weeks — and gives you peace of mind knowing you’ve got someone ready to capture those tiny, beautiful moments before they’re gone.
