Intro

One of the questions I get asked most often before a newborn photoshoot is:

"What should my baby wear?"

The good news is that when it comes to newborn photography, simple is always best.

Your newborn photographs should feel timeless, natural and focused on your baby, not busy outfits or distracting patterns. Choosing neutral colours and clothing helps create beautiful images that you'll still love years from now.

As a newborn photographer in Nottingham, I've put together a few simple tips to help you choose outfits for your baby's newborn photoshoot.

Choose Soft Neutral Colours

Neutral tones photograph beautifully and help create the timeless style that all my clients and parents love.

Think:

Cream

Beige

Soft brown

Oatmeal

White

Warm tones

These colours keep the focus on your baby's tiny features and work beautifully within my neutral newborn photography studio.

Soft tones also complement every skin tone and create a Calm and natural feel throughout your gallery.

Keep Outfits Simple

When it comes to newborn photography, less is definitely more.

Complicated outfits, large bows, bright colours and busy patterns can distract from what really matters – your beautiful baby.

A simple knitted romper, sleepsuit or plain vest is often all you need.

I also have a small collection of carefully selected newborn outfits available to use during your session, making things even easier for new parents.

The goal is to create photographs that feel timeless rather than trend-led.

Textures Photograph Beautifully

Although I recommend keeping colours simple, adding texture can help bring depth and interest to your photographs.

Some lovely options include:

Knitted rompers

Ribbed fabrics

Soft cottons

Linen

Chunky knit blankets ( I also have a small selection of beautifully picked blankets which can be used during your photoshoot)

These textures add warmth and softness without overwhelming the image.

Because my style focuses on natural newborn photography, subtle textures work perfectly within the neutral colour palette.

What Should Parents Wear?

If you're planning to be included in your newborn photos (which I highly recommend but there's no pressure at all!), it's worth thinking about your outfits too.

The same rule applies here – keep it simple and neutral.

Soft creams, beige, white, taupe tones work beautifully together. Upon booking your photoshoot I always send through a copy of my Welcome guide which has a more in-depth section on, clothing, outfits etc.

Try to avoid:

Bright colours

Large logos

Bold patterns

Neon shades

Cool tones

I always advise when planning outfits its best to start with 1 persons first and then work from there. The aim isn't to have everyone matching, Instead, choose colours that complement each other and create a soft, cohesive look. .You don't need to match exactly.

The focus should always be on the connection between you and your baby.

Comfort is always the Priority

As lovely as outfits are, your baby's comfort will always come first.

Choose clothing that is easy to remove and doesn't leave lots of marks on their skin.

I always advise to bring baby in a base layer of a plain white vest which we can then add on top of.

Remember, newborn photography sessions are designed to be relaxed and baby-led. There is no pressure for everything to be perfect.

Some of the most beautiful photographs are captured when babies are wrapped up comfortably and simply being themselves.

Things To Avoid

To help create a timeless gallery, I generally recommend avoiding:

Bright colours

Character clothing

Large logos

Busy patterns

Neon shades

Clothing that is too large or oversized

Cool toned colours - Grey, Blue, to much black.

While these styles can be lovely in everyday life, they can sometimes distract from your baby in photographs.

Simple, neutral clothing helps keep the focus exactly where it belongs.
